Sweden c.1820 A terrific chest from Sweden c. 1820 having three drawers and retaining the original painted surface. Please notice the clean lines of the construction with the top, sides and front consisting of right angles until the feet change to a curved profile. Close examination reveals the use of mortise and tenon joinery as well as large scale dovetails joining the drawers. The combination of three colours of paint is quite striking and gives the chest a rather modern appearance with the large blocks of a single colour. Another tip off to the rural origin of the piece is the unmatched hardware on the drawers. As brass and iron hardware were difficult to acquire, it was quite common to recycle and reuse pieces from discarded furniture. This is a handsome chest from early 19th century Scandinavia that will continue to give pleasure in a home today.
