She dyes the wool yarn with modern “acid” dyes (vinegar is the acid involved), which have good lightfastness and washfastness and minimal environmental effects. Finished on both sides, the rug is reversible, with corner tassels resulting from the four-selvage tapestry weaving technique perfected 1,200 years ago by the Natives of the American Southwest. As well as finished selvages on all four sides, the yarn is very tightly packed for durability and long wearing. If requested, the rug can be prepared for hanging on the wall. In “Earth Air Fire Water,” an overall pattern of diamonds woven with a Navajo twill technique—which yields a very thick dense textile—gives a visual structure to the flowing, organic shapes of the changing weft colors.
