I like to approach every project with an attitude of openness and exploration. I love finding new ways to use materials and technology in the realization of an idea. My work has to be pleasing to look at as a whole but it also has to be pleasing in the details, even those that are unseen. The finished object has to make sense and be true to the materials used as well as to the people who will ultimately live with and use it. Jon' s work is in the homes of architects, designers, and clients who appreciate the collaborative process of creation and fine craftsmanship. His work is designed to last for generations and uses materials that are recycled and recyclable. Jon has been designing and creating useful objects for close to twenty-five years. He started working with metal when he designed and built his first bicycle frame in the late 1980's. After building bicycle frames for a few years he worked with metal tubing and fabric, creating many award winning tension fabric structures for architectural installations as well as trade show exhibits. His love of the ocean and the outdoors led to building traditional skin on frame kayaks based on the traditions of the west Greenland Inuit. He built the first of these for his son from wood he and friend cut along the Maine coast. These kayaks achieve their beauty through an elimination of anything extraneous to the ultimate function of moving through the water. Working to create unique fabric sculptures for Fifth Avenue retailers and some of the biggest trade show booths in the world and exploring the centuries old art of kayak building has given Jon a broad understanding of materials and a view point that blends art and engineering. His latest endeavors have been built on his life experience to bring client's dreams to life in interesting and functional objects.
